Andrea Martinelli was born in Prato in 1965 and studied at the Istituto Statale d'Arte of Porta Romana in Florence. Between 1992 and 1993 he caught Giovanni Testori's attention with the series of painted papers entitled Senescenze, displayed in Florence and in Milan. Some of his latest painted papers are now on display in this exhibition as well, together with oils on canvas and on board. This time Martinelli reveals his preference for portraits of city persons, alone in the middle of the night, the faces enligthed with street lamps, defiantly or astonished. The artist takes the way of realism, showing a great strength in drawing and in the use of the monocromo: realist painting is now as high and universal as it has not been for a long time. The catalogue reproduces the works on display enlarging significant details. There is also an introduction, a critical anthology and a bio-bibliographical note.
