The study begins with a discussion of the background, techniques and archaeological findings on cremation. Then, groups of material are discussed in chapters organized according to the provenance and date of the tomb groups and other materials represented in the Etruscan and Italic collection of the Mediterranean Section of the University of Pennsylvania, Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (hereafter usually abbreviated 'University Museum'). The study concludes with some remarks on the use of archaeological evidence - the contents of urns and tombs - for the interpretation of funerary ritual and social customs in ancient Etruria. Data on funerary ritual, pathology and demography are presented in a series of tables that list all urns with contents preserved, all skeletal materials, other contents of urns/tombs, animal bones, and estimated pyre temperatures in support of the analyses proposed in the text. A small set of illustrations includes photographs of selected urns, selected bones and other human remains, archival documents for the Cogion Tomb and Toscanella Tomb, selected vases, and facsimiles of inscriptions.
